We’re Anita and Hendrik, two people with a passion for German bread culture and a desire to bring that culture to Australia.
Living on the Mornington Peninsula, we believe it is the perfect place to create a community that shares our values and love of good, healthy, sourdough bread.
At Butterken Bakery we are dedicated to handcrafting sourdough bread of artisan quality, with a modern approach to health, sustainability and taste.

Traditional German baking techniques and a strong passion for quality means we have the best pretzels in Melbourne if we (and our lovely customers!) say so ourselves. We also offer a seasonal menu of delicious German cakes and pastries.

Our Team
Anita - Owner & Manager
Anita is the crucial cog in the Butterken machine that connects every other moving part and makes sure they are working harmoniously toward their common goal. Managing day-to-day operations in the front of house as well as attending to business administration, it is clear that Anita has a fiery passion for the bakery. Always striving for better, Anita brings the spirit that pushes others onwards and upwards, helping give Butterken the reputation it has for great atmosphere and products.
Hendrik - Owner & Head Baker
Hendrik is the powerhouse of ideas, knowledge, and creativity that is showcased through Butterken’s vast and delicious product range. Hendrik is always improving, brainstorming, and experimenting and has created an environment for bakers to follow suit. His leadership has allowed Butterken to have an endless supply of new products, ideas and creations of the highest quality. Hendrik has a love for baking and swinging pretzels that cannot be matched and he manages to instill that passion in everyone he meets.
